What Brazen Hussy or Huss-he doesn’t love some spooky Halloween fare – even if it’s not Halloween? Here's the scoop on a a fantasy with a magical plot about witches and spells – and love.

Decades before Samantha was twitching her nose on “Bewitched,” another blonde with supernatural powers was in love with a mortal in “I Married a Witch.”

It's fun, witty, romantic and crazy - sort of a supernatural screwball comedy. And it works.

The l942 film was directed by French writer and filmmaker René Clair (who started his career directing silent movies that mixed fantasy with comedy) and it stars the luscious Veronica Lake and the ever debonair, versatile and doggone-good-in-everything-he-did actor Fredric March. Susan Hayward, Cecil Kellaway, and Robert Benchley are also in the cast. Gordon Jennings (who did the doozy special effects for "War of the Worlds" in l953) concocted the “magic” and Edith Head designed the costumes.

“I Married a Witch” starts with a flashback to the Salem witch murders and we learn the character played by March has passed this way more than once before – reincarnated, that is, and under a witch’s curse for his cruelty in the past. But lightning splits open a tree, releasing some spirits. Of course, spells do sometimes go wrong and, well, click the link and – like magic -- see what happens… “I Married a Witch” (full movie, free on YouTube)
