The Brazen Fabulousness of Pulp Sci Fi Art

“I have never listened to anyone who criticized my taste in space travel, sideshows or gorillas. When this occurs, I pack up my dinosaurs and leave the room.”
― Ray Bradbury (Zen in the Art of Writing)

So do we, dear Mr. Bradbury (and, by the way, we picture you enjoying some fabulous fun in your-post life adventures among the stars…)

Did we just hear you say “WHAAAAT????”

Read on, darlings. Ray Bradbury, (who passed June 5, 2012, at age 91) wrote some of the most imaginative, mesmerizing, haunting and all around unique and fabo sci fi and fantasy of the 20th Century (Martian Chronicles, Fahrenheit 451, The October Country, The Illustrated Man and more).

So, what does that have to do with over-the-top vintage pulp magazines and books? Plenty.

For one thing, how can we not adore the art – the mini skirted hussies and huss-hes!?! The ideas for Halloween costumes! The wild adventures depicted!

Starting in the l930s and taking off in the l940s, these paperbacks were loaded with imaginative stories, often involving space travel and some of the weirdest alien creatures (and brazen intergalactic babes). imaginable.

Unless you are a snob (by the way, you need to get your nose out of joint and loosen up -- or ciao and don’t let the virtual door hit you on your way out of the Brazen Hussies), read on, be enlightened and, one hopes, be “en-brazened” (we just made up that word, because we can).

It turns out, darlings, that many undeniably great writers got their initial starts writing for what came to be known as pulp fiction – including Ray Bradbury, Frederik Pohl, Isaac Asimov and Robert Heinlein. Super Science Stories was one of the most famous outlets for these masters when they started out sharing their visions of the galaxy and the inner powers and mysteries of the mind in the l940s.

(Oh, and word to the brazen-wise – if you spot any of these vintage pulp publications in grandma’s garage or your local thrift store, they are highly collectible as well as still fun!)
